The Janella Way: BEGIN
You are winning until you decide to stop. You are a winner until you decide to give up. So BEGIN. And if you fail, BEGIN AGAIN.
BEGIN your journey to greatness. Stepping foot on a campus that births phenomenal, well-rounded aces in every field is intimidating, and almost frightening. Being surrounded by students who are geniuses, experts and professionals in their respective areas of interests is truly humbling and awakening. Here at HOWARD, everyone is the best. Everyone is great. Everyone is talented. Everyone is two, if not three steps ahead.
You may get pushed into a bubble of self-doubt and lose confidence. You may feel left behind.
Truth is, there will always be someone better than you, and it is in our nature as humans to compare ourselves to the growth and success of other people. But do not forget that you are in the same campus as the people you are comparing yourself to. There is a reason why they are here, but the same reason why they are here is why YOU are here.
Let us not waste our time and energy sitting in a puddle of self-pity reflecting on what we should have, could have or would have done and simply… BEGIN. BEGIN to put yourself on the same pedestal that you put others in. BEGIN to strive towards creating yourself, your brand, your legacy and your mark on this campus instead of comparing yourself to those who have already BEGUN.
IF YOU CAN’T FIND AN ANSWER, MAKE ONE. It is now time to BEGIN to rebrand, recreate and redefine who you are and what purpose you serve, because if one thing is for certain, it is that YOU are here because you are SUPPOSED TO BE. If you feel as if you are behind then BEGIN and grow at your own pace. BEGIN to build your own path.
With the help and guidance of THE JANELLA WAY, my administration will support your BEGINNING and your NEW BEGINNINGS to the best of our abilities by ensuring that you are thought of, provided for, heard and represented.
Allow me to SERVE you in your journey. Allow me to BEGIN mine by creating answers to questions we cannot find the answers to. And as we BEGIN our journey to success at the MECCA, we will BEGIN to forget the self-doubt, and the self-pity because you are winning until you decide to stop BEGINNING AGAIN.
Your future is already written for you, it is now time to pick up the pen… this year, being your president was written in mine.
Vote for Janella “Jae” Laurio, and let us BEGIN AGAIN!
My
Mission
COAS peers and friends, I am here to facilitate your transition into your new HOME with the support of HOWARD university.
-
In accordance with the mission of the College Of Arts and Sciences, The Janella Way: BEGIN, strives for an improved journey to intellectual freedom, social justice, artistic expression and pursuit of knowledge (The COAS mission according to coas.howard.edu) through the betterment of student advocacy, involvement, engagement and representation. In addition, I seek the advancement of the freshmen experience for, but not limited to, COAS freshmen with the proper furnishing of different programs and events as investment in all their respective fields, talents and skills. Most importantly, I will place great value and importance in the students’ equality and well-being.
-
With an astute and cautious plan, BEGIN emphasizes the transparency between students and their elected student leaders, in addition to the improved communication between our respective staff and administration. I will strive for the vocal advocacy of the concerns within the jurisdiction of my power, as well as the issues that are above the freshman council with the promise to be an active voice in the issues that are beyond my administration, and not its immediate change. I do not promise to control what is not within my power for if it were easy, it would have already been done, but trust that I will be an active seeker and advocate for these problems with the intention of doing what I am capable of to help improve these concerns.
-
Ultimately, The Janella Way: BEGIN, seeks to encourage the development of the seeds in the COAS Freshmen experience that will serve as their building blocks throughout their undergraduate and graduate years by endowing more resources and opportunities for growth and involvement in themselves, as well as their local and international communities.
The Janella Way fulfills its mission by:
-
Providing different events and programs dedicated to all 23 Majors and Minors within the College of Arts and Sciences in an equal manner
-
Improving the quality of communication to ensure that all COAS students are knowledgeable of the different opportunities and resources available to them
-
Continuing to advocate for the issues that are beyond the power of Freshmen council
-
Supplying COAS freshmen with essential resources that aid their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being, in addition to the encouragement of awareness in different social issues locally and internationally
-
Placing importance in the value of servitude and philanthropy in local and international communities
